New Chapters takes you to the real showroom ! – Huishan Zhang 2018 AW London Fashion Week
This London Fashion Week, New Chapters had the honour to receive Huishan Zhang’s invitation to experience his 2018AW show.
Huishan Zhang, the designer’s eponymous brand, was established in 2011. As a Chinese born and London based designer, Huishan Zhang has integrated Eastern elements into the high couture culture in the West and formed his own unique style.
Although a young designer, Huishan is already famous within the fashion industry. Huishan studied at Central Saint Martins College and graduated in 2010. During his studies Zhang was handpicked by Delphine Arnault to spend his 3rd year working in the House of Dior, Paris – working in leather goods and Dior’s Haute Couture Atelier. In 2014 and 2015, Huishan was named the BOF 500 as one of the people shaping the Global Fashion Industry.
The AW show this year was held in London’s Savile Club, a traditional London gentlemen’s club established in 1868. The interior of the building was decorated elegantly.
Huishan Zhang’s Autumn Winter 2018 collection explores an evolving narrative inspired by Asian film director Wong Kar-wai’s work on films Chunking Express and the iconic 2046. Among the first few pieces, Huishan explored a dark romance, mirroring 2046’s mysterious storyline, to build a desire for question among the audience.
The film’s juxtaposition is also reflected through the contrasting fabrics working in Huishan’s design. Provocative patent vegan leather is mixed with delicate feathers and hand painted lace. Crystal and pearl fringing hangs from lux satin whilst delicate sequined netting is layered under autumnal tweeds. This series of unique design refreshes the audience and perfectly demonstrates a sense of freedom and self-exploration.
Another highlight of the show is designer’s use of jacquard wallpaper like blossom prints refreshingly contrasted with eighties pearlescent sequinned looks, which brings a sense of stunning liveliness.
Huishan Zhang’s Autumn Winter 2018 collection will be available from July 2018 in stockists worldwide as well as the designer’s recently opened flagship boutique on London’s Mount Street.
